With climate change presenting a real challenge for us all, we need to rethink business and rise to the extraordinary opportunity for a more efficient, cost effective and environmentally sound screen industry. From the energy, equipment and materials used, to the climate stories we tell on screen - we have the capacity to come together across all departments for incredible impact.
As members of this highly skilled and creative industry, we can utilise our unique platform and problem solving skills to adopt greener technology and processes, reduce our carbon footprint and protect the natural world which plays such a vital role in the stories we tell.
Introducing - The Green Handshake - a guiding set of sustainable actions that all departments can commit to from actors to crew to production.
The 4 overarching principles of The Green Handshake:
- Artists and crew commit to support a productions sustainability standards via their own environmental efforts.
- Artists and crew will consider the carbon impact of all requests made and strive to reduce this impact wherever possible.
- Artists and crew will use their voice off screen (on social media and in interviews) to highlight and celebrate the sustainable production process and its importance.
- Artists and crew will engage other cast members and crew on the topic of sustainability, and contribute to a cultural shift towards normalising sustainable production.

Remember - the Green Handshake is a model for best practice. Artists & crew are encouraged to aim for the most impactful actions possible within their circumstances and amend their commitments on a case by case basis.
This handshake has been adapted by Sustainable Screens Australia, and builds on the Green Rider initiatives from UK's BAFTA albert and Equity for a Green New Deal.
